Burbank City Hall

Banquetas Chair

Description:

Burbank City Hall (California, 1943) is one of three city structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though it was added to this list in 1996, an intrusive 1960's addition was not removed until 2001. The interior was restored at that time, including re-installation of a Hugo Ballin mural that had been partly removed to create a passageway to the former addition. Ballin, who also created murals at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, painted two scenes for Burbank City Hall. One is located in the rotunda and is called "Burbank Industry." The other, located in the Council Chamber, is called "Four Freedoms." The building is an example of Moderne or Art Deco architecture from the era of the Works Progress Administration, with restrained geometry, exterior bas relief panels, and interior murals depicting civic ideals. Tours of the City hall are available through the City of Burbank web site. Burbank City Hall is one of the most frequently filmed and photographed city halls in America.
